Split tickets are allowed
Condition 14.2 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel lets you use a combination of two or more tickets for a journey, unless a ticket's own rules exclude it. The Conditions don't treat split tickets differently for compensation: the delay is measured at your destination (condition 32.1).
How to claim
- Check the train that delayed you on Railhop. Tell Railhop where you travelled and roughly when. It finds the train, the company that ran it and how late you reached your destination.
- Railhop fills in the train company's claim form. In the Railhop iPhone app, or with Railhop's browser extension on a computer, Railhop opens the claim form of the company that ran your train and fills it in for you, with your journey, your ticket and your details.
- Check it and press submit. You check the claim and press submit on the train company's own form, within 28 days of travelling. Include every ticket you used, following any split ticket rules the company has (below). The train company pays you directly. Railhop never submits a claim for you.
Train companies with split ticket rules
| Train company | What it says | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| East Midlands Railway | If an EMR delay makes you miss a connection, you can claim from EMR whichever company runs the next train. If you hold split tickets, send images of all of them. | Guide |
| Lumo | If you have a combination of tickets, Lumo pays for your whole journey when one of them covers a delayed Lumo train. If another operator's train delayed you, claim from that operator. | Guide |
| Southeastern | On split tickets, make one claim for the whole journey: enter the ticket number as 00000, choose the delay reason Other with "split ticket used", and attach all your tickets in a single photo. | Guide |
Other companies' pages we checked don't mention split tickets. Include every ticket you used and say in the claim that the journey was on split tickets.
