Service delay refunds

TfL's online account terms say you can apply for a service delay refund if your journey was delayed by 15 minutes or more on London Underground and DLR services, or 30 minutes or more on London Overground and Elizabeth line services.

  • Contactless: TfL refunds the single fare for the delayed journey, if the reason for the delay was within its control.
  • Oyster: TfL refunds the pay as you go fare for the delayed journey.
  • Claim through your TfL account within 28 days of the delay.

Forgot to tap out, or an incomplete journey

If a journey has no tap-in or no tap-out, TfL charges a maximum fare. Most are put right by themselves, so wait 48 hours. If yours isn't, ask TfL through your account within 8 weeks: up to 3 a month online, more by phone on 0343 222 1234. Add your statement to Railhop and it finds them, and shows which to ask for first.

National Rail trains in London

Trains run by a train company, such as Southern, Thameslink or c2c, aren't refunded by TfL even if you paid with contactless or Oyster. Claim Delay Repay from the train company instead, and Railhop fills in its form for you: see Delay Repay with contactless and Oyster.

Your journey history

  • Contactless: your TfL account shows up to 13 months of journey and payment history.
  • Oyster: up to 8 weeks of journey history.
  • Without an account you can only see 7 days, and you enter the card details each time.

Download the statement from your TfL account and add it to Railhop: it checks every journey on it.

Questions

Can I get a refund from TfL if the Tube was delayed?

Yes, if the journey was delayed by 15 minutes or more (30 minutes or more on the Overground and Elizabeth line) for a reason within TfL's control. Claim through your TfL account within 28 days.

How do I get money back if I forgot to tap out?

Wait 48 hours, as most are refunded by themselves. Then add your statement to Railhop, which finds the journeys and how much each should pay back, and ask through your TfL account within 8 weeks of the journey. TfL lets you ask online for up to 3 a month; for more, call 0343 222 1234.

Does TfL refund delays on National Rail trains?

No. Trains run by a train company are covered by that company's Delay Repay scheme, even if you paid with contactless or Oyster. Railhop finds those delays on your statement and fills in the train company's form.
