You claim on the fare you paid
Delay Repay bands are a share of the ticket price: the National Rail Conditions of Travel minimum is "50% of the price paid" (condition 33.3), and train companies word their own bands the same way, such as Great Northern's "single fare paid" and CrossCountry's "single ticket price paid".
With a Railcard, the price paid is the discounted fare, so that's what the bands apply to. Every ticket type works the same way: a Railcard Single, Return or Advance ticket.
How much you get
The bands are the same as for any ticket; only the fare is lower:
| Scheme | 15 to 29 min | 30 to 59 min | 60 to 119 min | 120 min or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delay Repay 15 18 train companies, including Great Northern, Southern and GWR | 25% (12.5%) | 50% (25%) | 100% (50%) | 100% (100%) |
| Delay Repay 30 6 train companies, including LNER, CrossCountry and ScotRail | Nothing | 50% (25%) | 100% (50%) | 100% (100%) |
| TfL Service Delay Refund Elizabeth line, London Overground | Nothing | The single fare for the journey | ||
Railhop works this out for you: check your train and it shows how late it was, which band that is and what you're owed.
Your Railcard details aren't needed
No claim form we checked asks for your Railcard type, number or a photo of it. You give the ticket, its price and the journey. Railhop doesn't ask for your Railcard either.
Carry the Railcard when you travel: the Conditions of Travel say you must have it with you on a Railcard discounted ticket, or you're treated as travelling without a valid ticket (conditions 8.1 and 8.4).
How to claim
- Check your train on Railhop. Tell Railhop where you travelled and roughly when. It finds the train, how late it really was from National Rail's data, and what you're owed.
- Railhop fills in the train company's claim form. In the Railhop iPhone app, or with Railhop's browser extension on a computer, Railhop opens the claim form of the company that ran your train and fills it in for you, with your journey, your ticket and your details.
- Check it and press submit. You check the claim and press submit on the train company's own form, within 28 days of travelling. The train company pays you directly. Railhop never submits a claim for you.
The form asks for the price you paid and your ticket or booking as proof, not your Railcard.
Questions
Can I claim Delay Repay on a Railcard ticket?
Yes. A Railcard discounted ticket is covered like any other. Delay Repay is a share of the price you paid.
Is Delay Repay worked out on the full fare or the Railcard fare?
On the fare you paid, which with a Railcard is the discounted fare.
Do I need to give my Railcard number to claim?
No. No claim form we checked asks for your Railcard type, number or a photo of it.
Does it matter which Railcard I have?
No. The bands are a share of the price you paid, whichever Railcard discounted it.
